Historically, Tannat is grown in the Basque Country on the border of France and Spain. Traditionally, it is blended to lend its structure, color, and body to other wines. This wine contains the most antioxidants and is considered the “healthiest” of all red wines. Uruguay has successfully adopted Tannat as its “national grape”. Tannat was first planted in Paso Robles in the 1990’s and is now becoming more known as a single varietal. At Tobin James we make this 100% Tannat as well as our TNT, a 68% Tannat and 32% Tempranillo blend.

Our Tannat is tannic with a firm structure. Raspberry aromas tickle your nose. This wine has black plum and elderberry fruit flavors with slight smoky tobacco notes and hints of brown spices such as cardamom. We age our Tannat in oak barrels, lending a complex flavor profile of citrus, mint, spice, and herbs. This wine is not for the faint-hearted; it is robust, strong, and full-bodied with medium acidity.

Food Pairings: Pair this wine with protein-rich and fatty foods to compliment the acid and tannins. Try duck confit served with a beet salad. Enjoy with a side of oven baked sweet potato fries with garlic, red chili flakes, and bacon bits. Pair with aged cheeses, Parmesan, triple cream Camembert or Brie, Gorgonzola and Blue cheese.
